Birmingham Hip resurfacing

Birmingham Hip resurfacing

Birmingham hip resurfacing prosthesis

Hip resurfacing is an alternative to hip replacement. In this operation the top of the thigh bone or femur is not sacrificed as in a total hip replacement. The bone is shaped to receive a metal cap. The socket is deepened and shaped to receive a metallic cup.
The Birmingham Hip resurfacing prosthesis or the Birmingham Mid head resection prosthesis are used. The Birmingham hip resurfacing prosthesis is FDA approved and has the longest follow up.
Indications for  hip resurfacing
1.Primary osteoarthritis with good bone stock
2.Secondary osteo-arthritis
3.Post traumatic arthritis after a fracture of the socket of the hip bone(acetabular      fracture, femoral head fracture)
4.Avascular necrosis with moderate involvement of the head of the femur
5.Ankylosing spondylitis
6.Perthes disease with normal anatomy
7.Rheumatoid arthritis

Advantages of hip resurfacing surgery
1.Bone preservation
2.Restoration of normal function
3.Least incidence of dislocation
4.Long survivorship of the implant
5.Minimally invasive surgery
6.Faster rehabilitation.
7.No complications like thigh pain, loosening, infection.

Ideal candidates for Hip resurfacing

The hip anatomy and bone mineral density should be normal. Leg lengths should be equal. Men below 55 years with good bone stock are the ideal candidates.
Prostheses used- We routinely use the Birmingham hip resurfacing ( BHR) prosthesis. In those cases with more bone loss and cavities more bone is resected and is replaced with the Birmingham mid head resection prosthesis ( BMHR )

Cost of hip resurfacing
A single sided Hip resurfacing costs 7000 US dollars in a private room.

Video shows our patient, Mr. Chris Browne's recovery at 1 year after hip resurfacing.
